Broad daylight murder of noted senior journalist Jyotirmoy dey ( J. DEY) has become a matter of concern not only for the media but for the whole nation.It has been proved to be another blatant attempt to show increasing dominance of Underworld in Mumbai.Attempts to suppress media and our freedom of speech has entrenched a derogatory mark on our democracy.
About J.DEY
J.DEY as many of you may not know , was a senior journalist having decades of experience and expertise in investigative reporting.He was working for Mid-Day as a investigative reporter.He had left his high paying job in Hindustan lever Ltd to join low paying job of a journalist.He had uncovered underworld activities for past two decaded.Clearly, his demise has caused a serious loss not only to media but to the entire nation.
Murder Mystery
On june 11, he was shot dead by a gang of 4 persons in broad daylight in hiranandani area of Powai, Mumbai.They shot 5 bullets which caused him instant death.There are no evidences except a cctv footage which show that 4 persons were involved who carried on this operation on 2 bikes.Passers by are being questioned.A rough sketch of one of the accused has been prepared till now.
Around 40 persons including Assistant commissioner of police (ACP Mr.Anil Mahabole) has been suspected to be somewhere linked to this murder . But, on being extensively grilled by the police, ACP Anil had repeatedly claimed to be not linked with the murder. J DEY had written an article tarnishing the image of Anil Mahabole in 2005 , because of which Anil had filed a criminal defamation case against him.

Mumbai police has got an anonymous call from yemen claiming that attack on J DEY was done by IM (indian mujahideen).They had hired attackers from hyderabad,bihar and kashmir for mere sum of Rs.4 lakhs.Police is working on this matter.

7 people have been arrested who are accused of this murder.This whole plan was made and executed by Rohit Thangappan alias Satish Kalya, being one of seven accused.He acted on the orders of Chhota rajan.They did all for mere Rs.5lakhs. All the accused were not told the identity of J DEY.They just knew his sketch and his bike number.
Home Minister has announced a reward of Rs.10lakhs for Mumbai Crime branch for dealing with case with such perfection.
Not the first attack.
This is not the first case of attack on journalists.There have been around 16-17 instances of attacks on journalists in past 6 months.One recent one was a brutal attack on V.B.Unnithan , a journalist with malayalam daily “mathrubhumi”.On investigations, it was revealed that he was attacked by senior police officer Santosh N Nair for the former had written an article spoiling his image in 2009.
Anna Hazare, has written a letter to prime minister Manmohan Singh for enacting stringent laws to protect journalism in our country.All these attacks are a sheer insult to our democracy.Our freedom of speech is teared off blatantly.Need of the time is to enact stringent laws for punishing the accused as soon as possible.As long as the govt doesn’t gets strict with the criminals, these crimes are bound to happen again and again in coming times.These cause high level of insecurity not only to the media people but to the common people of nation as well.

ReplyDeleteyes day by day the attacks are increasiing on persons who are investigating then reporters or RTI activisits no one feels safe.
