These five NWS agree not to transfer "nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices" and "not in any way to assist, encourage, or induce" a non-nuclear weapon state (NNWS) to acquire nuclear weapons (Article I).
NNWS(Non-nuclear weapon states) parties to the NPT agree not to "receive," "manufacture" or "acquire" nuclear weapons or to "seek or receive any assistance in the manufacture of nuclear weapons".
As a result of this ,this treaty is considered to be discriminatory by India.
- Mr.Tharoor (Minister Of State For external affairs) says :
- The other major reason India cites for not signing the NPT and for possessing nuclear weapons is that China is one of the "nuclear haves."China and India have a longstanding border dispute, including a border war in 1962.
