Why INDIA not signing NPT ?

Five states are recognized by the NPT as Nuclear Weapon States (NWS): China , France , the Soviet Union , the United Kingdom , and the United States. These five nations are also the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

These five NWS agree not to transfer "nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices" and "not in any way to assist, encourage, or induce" a non-nuclear weapon state (NNWS) to acquire nuclear weapons (Article I).

NNWS(Non-nuclear weapon states) parties to the NPT agree not to "receive," "manufacture" or "acquire" nuclear weapons or to "seek or receive any assistance in the manufacture of nuclear weapons".

As a result of this ,this treaty is considered to be discriminatory by India.

  • Mr.Tharoor (Minister Of State For external affairs) says :
“We feel that no country should have nuclear weapons, but as long as some countries have nuclear weapons we will not accept a notion, so called non-proliferation which says that some countries are entitled to have them and others are not, that is discriminatory and that is not acceptable to India ".

  • The other major reason India cites for not signing the NPT and for possessing nuclear weapons is that China is one of the "nuclear haves."China and India have a longstanding border dispute, including a border war in 1962.
